Athletic Training
Athletic Trainers (ATs) are multi-skilled healthcare professionals who care for patients alongside physicians. ATs focus on the diagnosis and rehabilitation of injuries, emergency sideline care, as well as preventative and corrective exercise prescription. When working collaboratively with Sports Medicine Physicians, ATs are central to achieving successful treatment.
Athletic Trainers are sometimes confused with Personal Trainers. However, the two have very different training and skills. The AT academic curriculum and clinical training follow the medical model. ATs are required to graduate from an accredited baccalaureate or master’s program and 70% have a master’s degree.
Athletic Trainers shorten rehabilitation times for patients, which translates into less time missed from work, school or activity. In addition, ATs are able to evaluate and improve functional movements in a way that ultimately decreases reinjury rates and reduces healthcare costs.
